Approximation Hardness of Bounded Degree MIN-CSP and MIN-BISECTION

چکیده
We consider bounded occurrence (degree) instances of a minimum constraint satisfaction problem MIN-LIN2 and a MIN-BISECTION problem for graphs. MIN-LIN2 is an optimization problem for a given system of linear equations mod 2 to construct a solution that sat-isses the minimum number of them. E3-OCC-MIN-E3-LIN2 is the bounded occurrence (degree) problem restricted as follows: each equation has exactly 3 variables and each variable occurs in exactly 3 equations. Clearly, MIN-LIN2 is equivalent to another well known problem , the Nearest Codeword problem, and E3-OCC-MIN-E3-LIN2 to its bounded occurrence version. MIN-BISECTION is a problem of nding a minimum bisection of a graph, while 3-MIN-BISECTION is the MIN-BISECTION problem restricted to 3-regular graphs only. We show that, somewhat surprisingly, these two restricted problems are exactly as hard to approximate as their general versions. In particular, an approximation ratio lower bound for E3-OCC-MIN-E3-LIN2 (bounded 3-occurrence 3-ary Nearest Codeword problem) is equal to MIN-LIN2 (Nearest Codeword problem) lower bound n (1)=log log n. Moreover, an existence of a constant factor approximation ratio (or a PTAS) for 3-MIN-BISECTION entails existence of a constant approximation ratio (or a PTAS) for the general MIN-BISECTION.

Approximating CSPs with global cardinality constraints using SDP hierarchies
This work is concerned with approximating constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) with an additional global cardinality constraints. For example, Max Cut is a boolean CSP where the input is a graph G = (V, E) and the goal is to find a cut S ∪ S̄ = V that maximizes the number of crossing edges, |E(S , S̄ )|. The Max Bisection problem is a variant of Max Cut with an additional global constraint tha...
متن کاملStrengthened Hardness for Approximating Minimum Unique Game and Small Set Expansion
In this paper, the author puts forward a variation of Feige’s Hypothesis, which claims that it is hard on average refuting Unbalanced Max 3-XOR against biased assignments on a natural distribution. Under this hypothesis, the author strengthens the previous known hardness for approximating Minimum Unique Game, 5/4 − ǫ, by proving that Min 2-Lin-2 is hard to within 3/2 − ǫ and strengthens the pre...
متن کاملTowards a Characterization of Constant-Factor Approximable Min CSPs
We study the approximability of Minimum Constraint Satisfaction Problems (Min CSPs) with a fixed finite constraint language Γ on an arbitrary finite domain. The goal in such a problem is to minimize the number of unsatisfied constraints in a given instance of CSP(Γ). A recent result of Ene et al. says that, under the mild technical condition that Γ contains the equality relation, the basic LP r...
متن کاملWeighted coloring on planar, bipartite and split graphs: Complexity and approximation
We study complexity and approximation of min weighted node coloring in planar, bipartite and split graphs. We show that this problem is NP-hard in planar graphs, even if they are triangle-free and their maximum degree is bounded above by 4. Then, we prove that min weighted node coloring is NP-hard in P8-free bipartite graphs, but polynomial for P5-free bipartite graphs. We next focus on approxi...
متن کاملLocal Distribution and the Symmetry Gap: Approximability of Multiway Partitioning Problems
We study the approximability of multiway partitioning problems, examples of which include Multiway Cut, Node-weighted Multiway Cut, and Hypergraph Multiway Cut. We investigate these problems from the point of view of two possible generalizations: as Min-CSPs, and as Submodular Multiway Partition problems. These two generalizations lead to two natural relaxations that we call respectively the Lo...
